112. Camarasaurus lentus
Left Dentary with Teeth (Lower Jaw)

Camarasaurus lentus Late Jurassic
Western North America

Camarasaurus was a gigantic sauropod which had massive teeth for completely chewing plant food before swallowing it.

The dentary bone is the tooth bearing bone of the lower jaw and it was massive in Camarasaurus. This allowed for the long tooth roots to be firmly anchored and could withstand the forces during chewing. This left dentary also has three teeth.

The crowns of these teeth show high angled wear facets from contacting teeth of the upper jaw while chewing.
