113. Camptosaurus medius
Left Maxilla with Teeth (Upper Jaw)
Late Jurassic
Western North America
Camptosaurus was a relatively small, bipedal, plant-eating dinosaur. Lacking any defensive features, this docile herbivore used speed and agility to avoid predators.
The maxilla is the tooth bearing bone of the upper jaw. Although the teeth in Camptosaurus seem small, the inner surface of the maxillary teeth wore against the outer surface of the dentary (lower) teeth, creating a very effective mechanism for both slicing and chewing plant material.
This tooth arrangement would later evolve into the massive tooth batteries of the Cretaceous Iguanodon and the duck-billed dinosaurs.
