114. Camptosaurus medius
Right Dentary with Teeth (Lower Jaw)
Late Jurassic
Western North America
Camptosaurus was a relatively small, bipedal, plant-eating dinosaur. Lacking any defensive features, this docile herbivore used speed and agility to avoid predators.
The dentary is the tooth bearing bone of the lower jaw. Although the teeth in Camptosaurus seem small, the inner surface of the dentary teeth wore against the outer surface of the maxillary (upper) teeth, creating a very effective mechanism for both slicing and chewing plant material.
The broken boney projection at the back of the jaw was for the powerful jaw closing muscles.
