116. Ceratosaurus dentisulcatus
Left Humerus (Upper Arm Bone)
Late Jurassic
Western North America
Ceratosaurus was a large, but rare, predatory dinosaur in the ecosystem preserved in the famous Morrison Formation.
Most people would recognize Ceratosaurus as the dinosaur with the horn on its nose. It is a member of a more primitive lineage of carnivorous dinosaurs than its more famous contemporary Allosaurus.
The humerus, or upper arm bone, of Ceratosaurus was more lightly built and straight, unlike the curvature seen in the more robust Allosaurus humerus. This probably reflects some difference in the predatory behavior of these two dinosaurs, although we can’t clearly identify what that difference is.
