119. Stegosaurus stenops
Nuchal (Neck) Plate
Late Jurassic
Western North America
The name Stegosaurus means ‘roofed lizard’ and refers to the large boney plates which ran along the back of this beast.
This plate is from the neck region. The large but thin construction of the plate allowed for it to be used as a solar collector, to elevate body temperature, or as a radiator, to get rid of excess body heat.
The long grooves are for blood vessels which ran across it. The broadened based anchored the plate firmly in the body wall.
