120. Stegosaurus stenops
Large Tail Spike
Late Jurassic
Western North America
While the large back plates of Stegosaurus served to regulate body temperature, the spikes on the tail were for defense.
The large boney spikes were covered by a horny covering making the spike larger and sharper.
The long grooves were for blood vessels which ran across the bone surface.
Recent work has shown that the spikes were arranged sticking straight out from the tail.
